I stepped out of the shower this evening and, after I had grabbed my towel, I wasted five or ten minutes staring at myself in the mirror. This is not because I think I’m particularly lovely, but rather because over the past few months, beginning in January as my final Wintersession ended, I’ve developed acne.
Allow me to explain. All through high school, and most of college, my skin was clean and clear (pun intended). I was an object of loathing because of my lack of breakouts. While my friends avoided astronomers, fearful of jokes comparing them to various crater-ridden moons, I was blisfully pimple-free.
No more. Now there’s a swath of little red bumps that mar my forehead, and nothing I do can banish them for long. How is this possible? For heaven’s sake, I’ve graduated from college! Why is it that I seem to be regressing?
Before graduation, even before the start of senior year, I thought that leaving Wellesley would be the magical signal that would transform me into a Grown Up Person. After all, when you finish college you’re supposed to have a job, independence, confidence, the whole package. Instead, I’m writing a blog update from my old bedroom in my parents’ house, unable to find even temporary summer employment. I’m twenty one, almost twenty two, and I still feel like a child. I even look like one.
Perhaps these spots have been brought on by the stress that accompanies this pervasive feeling of failure. On the other hand, maybe they’re a reminder that, even though I’m back in the Real World, ostensibly a Grown Up Person, there is still a lot of room for growth. And maybe I should remember that growing, like everything else except instant coffee, takes time.

So, I must admit, this blog has been neglected just a tad. But a quick reminder: tonight is ‘09 S’mores Night! It has been in the works for quite some time now. The originally scheduled date was two weeks ago, but we had to cancel because of rain. Then we tentatively and unofficially rescheduled for last Thursday.. but again, rain. Finally, it’ll happen tonight – no rain, just frigid wind. Oh well, you can’t win it all.
Anyhows, hope to see lots of you there! 8-9pm at the firepit behind the campus center. We’ll have chocolate, graham crackers, marshmallows, big roasting sticks (is there an official name for those things?), and hot cider. Bundle up and grab a friend – it’ll be good times for sure.

If you’re visiting the blog it either means that a) you’ve been reading it since it was created by Samantha last spring, b) that you saw Evann’s e-mail about it last week, or c) you received the first newsletter of the semester that Courtney just sent out. Either way, welcome!
We’re really excited about things that are coming up this semester. Let’s talk Evergreens and our ‘09 Pub/Trivia Night.
Evergreens has finally established regular hours. Please come check us out and buy some Wellesley gear. 100% of the profits go towards funding our Senior Week at the end of May. If you already own Evergreens merch, please send your friends and tell first-years about it (especially if you’re an FYM or ResLife person)! Everyone (and their parents) needs to have a Wellesley Football t-shirt.
Also on the newsletter is information about our Evergreens t-shirt design contest. If you ever came up with a phrase, design, or image that you thought would be perfect on a shirt, this is your chance to make it happen. After the 10/12 deadline we’ll be picking our top three choices and all seniors get to vote on the winning design. Make sure to keep an eye on the Class of 2009 conference for details about voting.
Lastly, ‘09 Pub/Trivia Night will be held on Thursday 10/16 at Punch’s Alley. It was initially intended to be a regular pub night (similar to the one held last May) but this Friday, Courtney and I attended Trivia Night at Trident Bookstore on Newbury Street, hosted by some guy who called himself Matt Powers. Our team (Team Nucular) didn’t come anywhere close to winning (though we DID beat the other Wellesley team, Team Swelles) but we had a blast and decided on the spot that we’d like to do it again Wellesley-style. Come prepared to answers that are easier than “What year was the 1812 Overture composed?” and harder than “Barack Obama is the senator from which state?” If your team has the most random knowledge, you’ll all go home with snazzy Wellesley College bottle opener keychains.

[p.s. The answers are 1880 and Alaska. jk for one of them.]

because today is the first day that Evergreens is open this year!!!!
As many of you know, Evergreens is one of the main mechanisms that the Senior Class fundraises. While Evergreens mostly stocks apparel, such as the world famous Wellesley College Football shirts, we are also looking to expand what we sell. If you have any creative ideas for new things that we could sell, please please please post on the Class of 2009 conference, email class2009mail, or email any of the eboard members.
On that note, we are still accepting designs for a new Evergreens t-shirt! Submit your designs to “evergreens design” by Sunday, October 12th. This is your way to make a mark on the Wellesley campus- maybe your t-shirt will become a Wellesley classic!!
Evergreens will be open today from 11:30am-2:30pm on the Fourth Floor of the LuLu. There will be LOTS OF SALES going on the first couple weeks we are open, including discounted prices on shirts like “Bitch is the New Black”, “Wendy’s Truck Stop”, and “PMS: I Don’t Do Greek”. Please stop by and support the class of 2009!!!
Happy Monday!!
xo, Evann

Volunteer to help with our senior gift 2009 by emailing “Wellesley College Senior Gift” on FirstClass.
Not sure what senior gift is or its purpose? Here are some details recently posted on the ‘09 conference:
…the gift is not a concrete object. Instead it is an amount of money that your class raises to give to the college. For senior gift, you have the option of unrestricted or another designation that the class feels ultimately tied to. For example ‘07 raised money for International Student Financial Aid, ‘06 established an emergency student aid fund, and ‘05 had a portion of their gift go towards a CWS internship.
We are less focused on the amount of the gift so much as the # of students that participate. Some students are able and will give more, while others give a participation gift to be included in our participation numbers. As an incentive, any senior who donates $35 or more is able to nominate a Wellesley faculty or staff member(S) into an appreciation society. The records for participation are held by 2000 and 2004 with 90%.
If you have any more questions, feel free to join the conversation on FirstClass!
Best, Samantha

Thank you so much to everyone who participated in our first senior year survey! Class President, Alice Chen, just posted some of the survey results on the conference today. So for those of you without FirstClass access over the summer, I thought I would post her message and the results here.
Message from Alice: Survey results have been posted in the Senior Week and Senior Gala conferences. Take a look at them when you get a chance and please post your thoughts/responses to the respective conferences. We will definitely be recruiting people from our class to help out with the planning of Senior Week and we’d like for as many seniors to be involved as possible (seriously – help is greatly needed and the more the merrier). Please take advantage of the summer to brainstorm before we all get together in the fall to prepare for the planning ahead of us.
